Maize and cockscombs
This mural is based on a 17th-century Japanese screen of maize, which was introduced to Japan a century earlier, and cockscomb flowers, which grew there natively. It's hard to imagine two plants that could be more different. The corn twists this way and that, almost unruly, while the cockscomb flowers stand straight and tall.

Although the imagery dates from several centuries ago, the rich colors and contrasting shapes silhouetted against a neutral background make this mural feel very contemporary.
